ImageWhat is data governance – also known as DG, this is a comprehensive formula for the availability, usage, integrity, and protection of data used for startup and growing companies.  For any business to succeed, regardless of size or industry, there has to be a group of leaders who are responsible for creating the policies and procedures of a business so strategies can be understood and scope met.

For anyone who is looking into answers specific to what is data governance, the first step is to identify the appropriate program and then to have it implemented.  As a part of this process, there is the need to identify the person or people who will ultimately maintain management of all data assets for the company.  This involves some brainstorming so policies and procedures can be determined and then established.

Along with what is data governance is the critical step of making sure that all the processes involve specific dynamics such as the way in which the company’s data will be stored, archived, backed up, and even protected.  Unfortunately, we live in a world of technology that makes it far too tempting for some people to hack or steal.  For the company that has been stolen from, losing data could lead to the failure of the business.  Additionally, the policies have to know the way in which data will be used and who will have permission for accessing it.

Also included with the answers to what is data governance is the need to understand the right ways of keeping all company data in compliance with the law, as well as internal regulations.  Data governance is the overall guide that answers all these and other questions.  With this in place, the company has more confidence that information will not be lose or stolen.  This type of protection, especially in our current world, is vital to success.

You then have answers to the question of what is data governance that focuses on how skills are used.  For instance, anyone in a management position, regardless of level, owners, board members, and all employees should be trained and knowledgeable in the right ways to manage data from the ground up.  This means employees who gather information and input it into computer systems to the IT people who sort and store it, and everyone in between.

Sadly, there are many great companies that are working far too hard to reach success.  One of the primary mistakes seen is that they simply do not have sound answers to the question of what is data governance.  In other words, while the business has a great product or service, there is no control over the way in which data is collected, stored, distributed, and used.  As a result, a loose structure creates lots of potential for mishaps or theft, which would be devastating.

Keep in mind, when talking about data governance, this typically involves particular data.  The process of establishing a data governance process does not have to be rocket science but it does require hands-on involvement to understand the full need of the company so appropriate plans can be put into place.  Some of the specific decisions that go along with the question of what is data governance include the following:

  • Identifying the data model, which involves complete analysis, as well as metadata
  • Establishing true values based on potential and existing issues identified
  • Creating and distributing information pertaining to completed analysis, along with issues that are still pending resolution
  • Using programs so the quality of the data can be determined, which helps in identifying not only what is working, but also what is not working or what is violating regulations

With the answer to what is data governance, it is vital to consider all of the above points so a powerful model can be established.  Creating data governance for any company requires lots of face time with the people who make decisions.  This also involves listening to every employee, no matter the title, so the actual need is fully understood.  From there, the data governance program can be designed and implemented.  The result will be a functioning company that has good practices working for it.

We live in a business world of data and if this data is not protected and used in a beneficial way, the company will eventually fall flat on its face.  Even what seems like insignificant data is an important part of the business.  The great thing is that there are many exceptional data governance models already created or if preferred, one can be customized to the need of the business.
